The basic hypothesis behind neurological redundancy is opening all neural avenues to the cortex of the brain at one time. The more systems going, the better. After years of experimenting, the following procedure appears to be the most productive.
Prepare 81/2 x 11 inch paper like the following: (Example A)
Label three columns, A, B, C. Place numbers along the left edge of the paper. In column “A” we want an accurate adult verbal model associated with the visual model.
Example A
_______A_______B_______C_____
- 1____CAT____I________I________
2____BOY____I________I________
3____MAKE__ I________I________
4____MILK___I________I________
5____________I________I________
6____________I________I________
7____________I________I________
8____________I________I________
Teacher, parent, or tutor will put accurate written models on paper in column “A”. The paper should look like the Example A when the child is ready to use it.
Column “A” dialogue to the pupil is “Look at number one. Column “A”; as I say the letters in the word “CAT” – you say them aloud with me and trace “C”, ” A “, “T”. (There are two voices and the pupil traces. Pace the auditory model so the pupil is able to follow efficiently without getting behind or too slow. Provide the pupil with a 3×5 card.
Column “B” dialogue to the pupil is: “Cover column “A” with your card and look at column “B”. As I say the letters in the word “CAT”, you then write “CAT”. “C” “A” “T”. (One adult voice, pupil writes, no written model, only verbal model is provided.)
Column “C” dialogue to pupil is: “Cover column “A” & “B” with your card and write the word CAT from memory. This is your check to see if the pupil performs correctly. If pupil does something like this, Dat or cta, then the teacher should recycle through the whole procedure until pupil performs correctly. This procedure can be used to study spelling words, introduce new vocabulary in readers, to correct mispelled words in free lance writing (reports, creative writing, etc.)
A live voice can be used. However, the best procedure for classroom use is to make tapes and tapes provide the dialogue. Parent volunteers can make tapes for the school. Parents can provide this tutoring at home by using their own voice or by using tapes they have made. The procedure can be used chorally in the classroom with a group or the whole class. It is impossible for a teacher to provide this tutoring to individuals with out the tapes.
This procedure is a powerful procedure for visual-spatial learners, and for remedial pupils who need neurological redundancy procedures. Since the procedure is not harmful, it can be used with any child having difficulty learning to read, write or spell. It can be used to help dysgraphic children to write more efficiently. (Example B) Models can be put on work sheets in manuscript or cursive writing. Format can be modified to use a whole sentence. This is a “No Fail” procedure and can be used to sustain and build self-esteem.###
